Lady Godina's Rout - or - Peeping-Tom Spying out Pope-Joan, James Gillray: 1796
Return
Women's clothing (or lack of clothing) might show all! Note the candle-snuffer
is enjoying the sights. Why "Pope Joan"? It was said that there was a female
Pope, that to prove innocence of fathering a child, that she was brought to
court on charges of fathering a local woman's child. She proved her innocence
only by baring her breasts in public.
